Amusement parks: Tallest Waterslide

Worlds Tallest Waterslide

For you thrill seekers here it is.  The countdown continues for the opening of Verrückt — the world's tallest water slide — in Kansas City, Kansas, at Schlitterbahn water park. After multiple delays and test runs, the ride is still undergoing refinements, and at this point (June 29, 2014) there is no scheduled opening date. Verrückt, which means "insane" in German, towers 17-stories above the ground at 168 feet, 7 inches, and is taller than both Niagara Falls and the Statue of Liberty from toes to torch. It promises to be a daredevil blockbuster.

Here is what Schlitterbahn Waterparks & Resorts co-owner Jeff Henry, who created Verrückt with Schlitterbahn senior designer John Schooley, has to say about Verrückt: "John and I were the first people down; I'm still recovering mentally. It's like jumping off the Empire State Building. It's the scariest thing I've done."  Then he added, "It's dangerous, but it's a safe dangerous. Schlitterbahn is a family water park, but this isn't a family ride. It's for the thrill seekers of the world, people into extreme adventure."

Riders travel the equivalent of two football fields in 18 seconds, Henry says. It takes a spiral climb by foot of 264 steps to reach the top of the tower. Four riders are strapped into a rubber raft that is expected to reach speeds of 65 mph. The 607-foot-long fiberglass water slide starts as the "Drop," a 60-degree, 17-story near free-fall before swooping back up the 55-foot-tall "Hill" where riders go from 5 Gs to weightlessness before descending to a stop in a splash zone. It's expected to last all of 10 seconds. Velcro seat belts lash riders to the raft, and netting encloses the chute to retain the raft in the unlikely event it goes flying. During early testing, rafts did just that.

Here it is, Verruckt: Ride the world's tallest water slide :

But... since the tallest one isn't ready try this Loop-The-Loop Water slide until it is open.

Amusement Parks: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

New 'Harry Potter' attraction Diagon Alley to open at Universal theme park

Diagon Alley, the new Harry Potter-themed area at Universal Orlando Resort, is set to open early July, 2014.

Universal officials announced recently that the new Happy Potter attraction at Universal Studios Park will open in July 2014. It will double the size of the Harry Potter landscape in the park and will be tied via the Hogwarts Express train to the original Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal's Island of Adventure.

The new area's centerpiece ride, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, charts one of the most thrilling events from the Harry Potter universe.  The 4-minute ride features animatronic goblins, 3D projection systems, fog blasts, a deep dive into the bank and an encounter with Bill Weasley before descending into a wild subterranean escape through Gringotts bank to help retrieve a magical object and re-create a scene from the popular book and movie series. The new ride sits under a fire-breathing Ukranian Ironbelly dragon used to guard the bank from the likes of Mr. Harry Potter himself.

The thrill ride requires visitors to don 3D glasses and features 360-degree themed sets, intense 4K animations, and 3D projection systems for complete immersion. According to Theme Park Insider, visitors will be strapped into twin, 12-person cars which will be rocked by actuators and also sent speeding along rails. Clever deployment of fog blasts and water spritzers help add authenticity to key moments, even as epic confrontations play on-screen.

Take a look at the the first photos of Diagon Alley.

River Fun

Whitewater River Fun

One can waste half a lifetime with people one doesn't really like, or doing things when one would be better off somewhere else.    - Louis L'Amour

There's nothing. . .absolutely nothing. . .half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.
- Kenneth Cole

In spite the durability of rock walled canyons and the surging power of cataracting water, the wild river is a fragile thing -- the most fragile portion of the wilderness country.

 Definition

Kayaking
Very simply, whitewater (or white water) is simply frothy, caused by aerated and unstable current, bubbly water that looks white.  There are many forms; whitewater canoeing, whitewater kayaking, and just riding the rapids.  It is this last form we will look at here.

Riding the Rapids

Whitewater rafting is the challenging recreational outdoor activity of using an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other bodies of water.  Why?  Simple, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers.  And get wet... very wet.  Be aware, whitewater rafting can be a dangerous sport, especially if basic safety precautions are not observed. That said, fatalities are rare in both commercial and private rafting.

There are six classes, or grades, of rapids, starting with Class 1 - Very small rough areas, requiring no maneuvering - to Class 6,  rapids that are not passable and any attempt to do so would result in serious injury - i.e. NOT FUN!

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

Before we go any further lets give a tribute to the Hollywood movie The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug and its' riding the rapids in a barrel scene.  Makes you want to run out and try it, doesn't it.  Here?  Watchers, not doers.

There are just too many place to try and describe each of them here.  Instead we will try to recommend a few and even include clickable experiences.
First, according to  the National Geographic book Journeys of a Lifetime here is a list of the top 10 rivers to raft, with some [links] if you want the experience:

  5. Futaleufú River, Chile - Stretches are suitable for beginners, but there are also some Class V rapids [Rafting Futaleufu River - Río Futaleufú  ]

Amusement Parks

Life is like a carnival ride. You can play it safe and ride the merry-go-round, it's predictable. But, myself personally, I will ride the rollercoaster, for all it's glory and thrills, It's ups and downs, twists and turns, and rushes.   - Lynette Mack

Lets Do Something!

The weather is getting nice and I'd like to do something.  Can't afford a trip, say to a tropical island, maybe to the beach , although everyone goes there, and the movies are a night time thing so that only leaves amusement parks... but there are so many different kind.  I'll try to tell you the difference.

Carnivals

Originally, carnivals were a religious event, a festive season which occurred immediately before Lent  In the days before Lent, all rich food and drink had to be disposed of. The consumption of this, in a giant party that involved the whole community, is thought to be the origin of Carnival.

Carnivals are like circuses, they travel a lot.  In fact the one distinction between a carnival and other amusement parks was its temporariness, it wouldn't stay in one place for very long.  But unlike a circus,  usually held inside a large circular tent or ring set up outdoors, a carnival may cover a large space outdoors, in which the crowd can walk along to choose their desired form of entertainment.

Amusement Parks

An amusement park is a group of entertainment attractions, rides, and other events in a location for the enjoyment of large numbers of people.  Amusement parks evolved from European fairs and pleasure gardens, which were created for people's recreation and should not be confused with Theme Parks, regarded as a distinct style of amusement park. A theme park has landscaping, buildings, and attractions that are based on one or more specific themes or stories.
Apparently, several centuries ago amusement parks evolved into places of entertainment for the masses, where the public could view freak shows, acrobatics, conjuring and juggling, take part in competitions and walk through menageries.
Of course I can't forget Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, on the Atlantic Ocean.  It was first visited by pleasure seekers who would ride a horse-drawn streetcar line to the beach beginning in 1829.  Today it houses multiple (theme) parks and can host as many as a million people in a day.

Theme Parks

In common language, the terms theme park and amusement park are often synonymous. Theme parks are a specific type of amusement park, usually much more intricately themed to a certain subject or group of subjects than normal amusement parks. Disneyland, for example, located in Anaheim, California, was built around the concept of encapsulating multiple theme parks into a single amusement park. The opening of Disneyland, in 1955, completely changed the landscape of the amusement park industry.

Theme Parks can be further broken-down into three categories; Educational, Family-owned, and Regional.

Educational Theme Parks

Some parks use rides and attractions for educational purposes. Disney was the first to successfully open a large-scale theme park built around education, named Epcot.  Holy Land, USA, in Waterbury, Connecticut, was built to inspire Christian piety. While the three Dinosaur World parks (Florida, Texas, and Kentucky) entertain and educate families with dinosaurs, the SeaWorld chain of parks houses several thousand animals, fish and other sea life in dozens of attractions and exhibits focusing on animal education.

Family-owned theme parks

Knott's 300 Foot Tower Swing Ride
In the 1920s, Walter Knott and his family sold berries from a roadside stand and today we have Knott's Berry Farm. A Ghost Town was added but it wasn't until 1968 that it officially became an amusement park.

The Herschends family have several theme parks including Dollywood; located in the Knoxville-Smoky Mountains metroplex in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; Celebration City; in Branson, Missouri; and Wild Adventures; located 5 miles from Valdosta, Georgia.

Regional parks

Walt Disney World Resort Hotels
The first regional theme park, Six Flags, was Six Flags over Texas and helped create the modern, competitive theme park industry.  In a few years was the opening of the Walt Disney World resort complex in Florida.
